How can teachers use the Assign feature?

This article contains the following: 

Overview

Teachers can assign Pulse Questions, Writing Reviews and Tutoring/Live Help for students from within the Paper platform. Users must have a teacher role and have sections assigned to them. 

 

Accessing the Assignments Feature

  1. Log into Your Teacher Account: Upon logging in for the first time, you will see a yellow box titled "Kickstart your students' journey."
  2. Create an Assignment:
    • Click the blue "Create Assignment" button.
    • After the first use, this box will disappear, but the blue button will remain accessible. You can continue to create from here, or the new Assignments tab at the top of your dashboard.

Pulse Questions

This will assign Pulse Questions for students to complete. 

1. Select "Pulse questions" and “Create assignment"

2. Enter the required information:

3. Select the section for the assignment from the section drop-down.

4. Assignments can be saved as a draft, assigned to an entire section, or assigned to select students within a section.

Select students by clicking the box next to the student name, or search for individual students using the search bar tool on the top right.

5. Enter information for the type of questions you'd like to generate and click "Generate questions"

Five questions will be generated automatically after a few moments. Once questions are generated, edit question details by clicking "Edit" under the “Pulse question details” section. Edit individual questions by clicking either "Edit" or "Regenerate" under each question. Teachers can assign between 1-5 questions per assignment. To remove questions, uncheck the box next to the question.

6. Click "Next" for a file review of your assignment, from here you can edit the following if needed:

  • Assignment details
  • Students
  • Question details

Once the Pulse Questions are live and assigned to students, the assignment can no longer be edited or adjusted.

7. Click "Save & assign".

If not ready to assign the Pulse Questions, click 'Save as draft' at any point during creation. The draft assignments can be found on the dashboard under the "Your recent assignments" section.

To assign to additional sections, click on the 3 vertical dots on the dashboard to duplicate the assignment.

To view student progress, click on the assignment to view the details, then click the drop-down next to the "Student Progress" section.

 

Writing Review

This will assign a writing review for students to submit to the Review Center for feedback from a tutor.

1. Select "Writing Review."

2. Enter assignment details and type of submission.

3. Add instructions and upload any additional documents (e.g. grading rubrics). This will be visible for the tutor when the student submits their work.

4. Assignments can be saved as a draft, assigned to an entire section, or assigned to select students within a section.

5. To assign to additional sections, the assignment can be duplicated from the dashboard.

6. After creating an assignment, you'll find a "Your Recent Assignments" section on the dashboard. This has basic information about the Assignment, as well as a student completion tracker. Click on an Assignment to view more details about it, such as a shareable link and individual student performance data.

Note: The completion status will update once the student has submitted their writing to the Review Center. The status does not indicate if the writing has been reviewed or if the student has downloaded the reviewed essay.

 

Live Help

This will assign students to start a Live Help session with a tutor.

1. Choose "Tutoring Session."

2. Add in the assignment name, subject, and due date.

3. Assignments can be saved as a draft, assigned to an entire section, or assigned to select students within a section.

4. Add instructions, additional documents, and any notes for the tutor.

5. To assign to additional sections, the assignment can be duplicated from the dashboard.

6. After creating an assignment, you'll find a "Your Recent Assignments" section on the dashboard. This has basic information about the Assignment, as well as student completion tracker.

7. To view more details, click on an Assignment. You will then see the submission date, total session time (if completed), and session success (if completed by the tutor) for each student. You can click on a student's name to view the transcript of their session as well.

Note: The completion status will be updated once a student ends the Live Help session, and it will mark that they completed their assignment or the tutor ends the session and indicates the assignment was completed. There may be a delay of up to 24 hours before the assignment shows as completed.
